The agency spends about $30,000 a year in the county offering first aid and CPR classes and helping people during emergencies.
American Red Cross volunteer Tammy Herron said fund-raisers are planned for today and Friday to try to raise at least $3,000.
Herron said in 2006 the Red Cross helped out in 12 house fires, assisting 38 people. Just in January and February of this year, the Red Cross has helped the victims of eight house fires.
The Red Cross will host a pizza lunch today followed by a silent auction at the community services building in Gate City. The lunch is $5, and it is free to attend the auction, Herron said.
On Friday, the Red Cross will host a jail-a-thon.
"If you work in the Gate City corporate limits, you are at risk of being arrested and taken to a jail at the 911 center," Herron said. "For $5, people can fill out a warrant to have Gate City police officers arrest someone and have them taken to the jail at the 911 center, where the arrested person has to raise $10 to get out of jail."
