Lee County deputies raid suspected counterfeiter

Staff report • Mar 28, 2007 at 12:00 AM

A Sunday raid on a Rose Hill residence resulted in the seizure of items believed to be part of a counterfeiting operation, said Lee County Sheriff Gary Parsons.

The sheriff said his officers served a search warrant on the Campie Trailer Park residence of Michael Carroll, 27, Sunday night and seized items including blank money orders, Western Union shipping boxes, and records indicating ties to Nigerian financial entities.

Parsons alleges that Carroll has been falsifying money orders, which he then took to various stores and purchased merchandise then got back change, resulting in his obtaining the items purchased plus actual cash.

The sheriff said he will soon seek indictments against Carroll for passing a counterfeit $100 bill in Lee County and said federal charges are possible.

Parsons asks anyone who thinks they may have taken counterfeit currency or money orders to contact his office at (276) 346-7777.
