Church Hill mother charged after baby left in vehicle

Staff report • Mar 28, 2007 at 12:00 AM

Church Hill police charged Jessica Ruth Carrier, 20, 420 Hill Ave., Surgoinsville, with child abuse Tuesday afternoon for allegedly leaving her 10-month-old daughter alone in a vehicle while she went into a local store.

Police were called to the parking lot of the Family Dollar store shortly after 4 p.m. Tuesday on a complaint of an infant left alone in a vehicle.

Detective Dustin Dean stated in his report that when officers arrived they found the infant alone in a car seat with both back windows open about two inches.

Police Chief Mark Johnson said he couldn't disclose the exact amount of time the child was left unattended, but he said, "I think it will be more than substantial to merit the child abuse charge."

Church Hill EMS was called to the scene to give the infant medical attention, and she was later placed in the custody of Child Protective Services.

Johnson said Carrier arrived back at her vehicle about 10 minutes after officers arrived on the scene.
