CARTERS VALLEY - One suspect was in custody and another remained at large Sunday in a fatal stabbing which occurred late Saturday night at a Carters Valley mobile home park.
The Hawkins County Sheriff's Office was dispatched to the Carters Valley Crossing Mobile Home Park, 424 Carters Valley Road, shortly before 11 p.m. Saturday where deputies discovered Jeffery Allen McNally, 47, inside his residence dead apparently from a stab wound.
Witnesses told deputies two men came to McNally's residence around 10:30 p.m., allegedly with the intention of robbing the victim. Sheriff Roger Christian said Sunday that details about the murder were still "sketchy" Sunday evening, and some witness stories had changed.
But Christian said it is alleged that William Steve Derrick, 35, 280 Dykes Road, Church Hill, is the suspect who actually stabbed McNally. Derrick fled the scene and was still at large as of late Sunday evening.
The Rogersville Police Department's K-9 unit Driggon was called to the mobile home park Saturday night and tracked down the second suspect, Larry Dale Dykes, 1494 Christian Bend Road, Church Hill, who had reportedly hidden somewhere in the mobile home park after the stabbing.
Dykes was charged with first-degree murder, and is being held without bond in the Hawkins County Jail.
"We believe that Mr. Dykes and Mr. Derrick went to the victim's residence with the purpose of stealing money," Christian said. "The incident is still under investigation, and there are some details that are still unclear at this time. We believe Mr. Derrick was the person who did the stabbing, but we're alleging that they were co-conspirators in this robbery, and that's why Mr. Dykes is being charged with first-degree murder as well."
Christian said nothing was actually stolen from the residence. McNally's girlfriend apparently witnessed the stabbing and then either called 911 herself or had someone call 911, Christian said.
Anyone with information about Derrick's whereabouts is asked to contact the HCSO at 272-4848.
