Scott County sheriff warns residents of fund-raising scam

CLIFFORD JEFFERY • Mar 20, 2007 at 11:30 AM

GATE CITY - A man in his mid- to late 30s is asking residents in Scott County for money.

The man is about 6 feet tall with sandy brown hair. He's been going to area businesses trying to take donations.

The man says the money will be used for the printing of programs for the Rye Cove High School softball and baseball teams, said Scott County Sheriff Jerry Broadwater.

The man has asked for $800 or more, but he reduces the amount if the merchant says no the first time, Broadwater said.

The man tells people he is working with a former coach to collect the donations, but that person has not worked with the school system for a number of years, Broadwater said.

"So far, the activity has been limited to the Duffield, Rye Cove and Clinchport area," Broadwater said. "The request for these donations is not authorized by the school."

Anyone who is approached about donating to a school in Scott County, or anyone who has given the man money, can call the Scott County Sheriff's Department Criminal Investigations Division at (276)386-1351.
