Lee farmer offers reward for information in cattle slayings, mutilations

JONESVILLE - A Lee County farmer is offering a $500 reward for information that leads to the arrest and conviction of the person or persons responsible for the weekend killing and mutilation of one of his cows.

Meanwhile, authorities are seeking information on the perpetrator of that crime and the possibly related killing and mutilation of another cow a month ago in another field nearby.

Lee County Sheriff Gary Parsons said his office was notified March 10 that Brian Dean had discovered the mutilated cow on his farm in the Sugar Run area earlier that day. It is believed the animal had been killed sometime Friday or early on Saturday morning. The sheriff described the cases as "strange" but said he does not believe they are related to any occult type activity.

Investigator Chris Oakley of the Lee County Sheriff's Department said the means of the killing has yet to be determined, but it is believed the cow may have been shot in the head - possibly in the eye. The type of gun used in the killing has not been determined. The killer then sliced off the animal's ears and individually removed her teats.

The investigator said the crime is similar to another that took place in the Sugar Run area about a month previously in which a cow belonging to Ray Lucas was killed and had its teats removed. The two cows were on farms located approximately one mile apart, said the investigator.

While the Lucas cow was killed near the road, Oakley said the Dean animal was located in a pasture that was approximately 100 yards off the road.

Oakley said the department has a few leads and even some suspects in the case, and noted that the Dean family is offering a reward for information that leads to the killer. The investigator encouraged anyone with information related to either case to contact the sheriff's office at (276)346-7777.
