At the top and along the southern ridge of Town Knob, firefighters from Rogersville, Striggersville and the Forestry Division kept the fire contained within the same perimeter achieved Monday. That left a protective buffer between the fire and nearby structures including the Hawkins County Central Dispatch communications tower. Although the fire was contained, it continued to smolder and flare up within its perimeter. As a result much of Rogersville, especially from the downtown area to the west, remained under a haze of smoke into the evening.
"We've got the fire well under control, and now the biggest aggravation is the smoke," Rogersville Assistant Fire Chief David Jackson said. "Everybody in town is suffering through that. There's nothing we can do about that accept let it burn itself out."
