UVa-Wise program gives students all-around look at campus

WISE - Prospective students and their families are invited to attend UVa-Wise 360 Degrees for a chance to preview the campus of the University of Virginia's College at Wise from every angle on Saturday. Students will also have the opportunity that afternoon to audition for the college's Marching Highland Cavaliers Band if they wish.

Intended to provide students with an all-around look at life at the college, UVa-Wise 360 Degrees includes an academic and activities fair, campus and residence hall tours, question-and-answer presentations by admissions counselors, and a complimentary lunch. Throughout the day, participants will have an opportunity to speak with faculty, staff and current students to learn more about the wide variety of academic, athletic and social opportunities available at UVa-Wise.

"This program is perfect for those considering UVa-Wise and will help them get a head start on the college application, financial aid and scholarship process," said Russell Necessary, vice chancellor for enrollment management.

Registration begins at 8:30 a.m. in Greear Gymnasium followed by a welcome address at 9 a.m. by Necessary and Chancellor David J. Prior. The academic and activities fair begins at 9:30 a.m. Students and their families will be treated to lunch in the dining hall at noon.

Auditions that afternoon for the Marching Highland Cavaliers Band will require students to perform 12 major scales, at least two octaves, a chromatic scale, and a sight-reading selection. Students auditioning for percussion will be required to perform 40 rudiments and 12 major scales pertinent to their instrument, as well as a sight-reading selection.

Students auditioning for color guard must be prepared to learn a short count sequence. Flags will be provided if students do not have one available. Students auditioning for the majorette corps must perform a prepared routine lasting approximately two minutes and must provide their own batons.

Students may also audition that day to major in the college's music program. Prospective majors auditioning for piano must perform 12 major scales, at least two octaves and two prepared pieces of contrasting style periods, from baroque to contemporary. Prospective majors auditioning for voice must perform "Caro Mio Ben" by Giordani in high or low key, and an additional classical, sacred or Broadway selection of their choice.

Another UVa-Wise 360 Degrees event is scheduled for April 21. Other auditions for the music major and the college band are also scheduled for March 3 and April 21.
