ROGERSVILLE - A Rogersville man who allegedly threatened to kill two teens with a sledgehammer in an apparent road rage incident last October was named last week in a five-count Hawkins County grand jury indictment.

The incident occurred the night of Oct. 13 as a 17-year-old female motorist and her 17-year-old female passenger were traveling south on Route 66 heading into Rogersville.

A Rogersville Police Department report stated that a silver Jeep merging into Route 66 traffic almost struck the teens' vehicle and then pulled into traffic behind the teens and almost struck the vehicle several times in the rear.

The driver became frightened and pulled her vehicle into the parking lot of Long John Silvers. She told police the Jeep followed her into the parking lot, and a man got out of the Jeep carrying a sledgehammer.

The man, later identified as William Boyd Kocsis, 47, 701 Dennis Drive, Rogersville, allegedly went to the driver's side door and started beating on the roof of the vehicle with his hand and cursing.

Kocsis then allegedly raised the sledgehammer above his head and told the driver he would "kill her and everyone else in the vehicle," the report stated.

Kocsis then got into his Jeep and drove away. A description of the Jeep was broadcast over the police radio, and minutes later it was spotted by Rogersville police on Broadway Avenue.

Upon stopping Kocsis, the officer smelled a strong odor of alcohol on his breath. Kocsis failed three field sobriety tests and was arrested.

He was indicted last Thursday on charges of aggravated assault, felony reckless endangerment, DUI, violation of the implied consent law, and possession of drug paraphernalia - a pipe.
