The ranking member on a committee is the leader of his or her party in that committee. Other congressmen will look to the ranking member for information and direction on the subcommittee or full committee's actions.
"I feel very blessed," Davis said in a news release. "This is a welcomed leadership position in my first term. I will continue to work hard for the 1st District now, as ranking member. I had a contract business that directly dealt with technology, so this is a great fit."
Davis said it is unusual for a first-term congressman to be named to this type of leadership position so early in his career.
"It is unusual, but finding a leadership position at this time is a welcome experience. It just goes back to my strong work ethic and my background in business as a citizen of the 1st District and a former member of the state legislature," Davis said.
"Congressman David Davis' background as both a legislator and an entrepreneur in the health services industry makes him the ideal candidate to lead the small business subcommittee on contracting and technology," said U.S. Rep. Steve Chabot, Republican leader of the House Small Business Committee. "I look forward to Congressman Davis' service and believe he'll be a great addition to our leadership team."
The subcommittee has jurisdiction over the Section 8(a) Business Development program as well as the Small Business Innovation Research program and the Small Business Technology Transfer program.
"I'm looking forward to being the spokesperson on creating and bringing technology to underserved areas in the 1st District and creating the new jobs our region needs," Davis said.
If Republicans regain the majority of Congress in two years, Davis is anticipated to be the chairman of the subcommittee.
Davis also is a member of the subcommittee on urban and rural entrepreneurship.
