CHURCH HILL — Volunteer High School’s auditorium will be transformed into a musical convent Friday and Saturday evening when night club singer Deloris Van Cartier hides out from the mob in the student musical production of “Sister Act.”

Director Chris Broadhead said the play is similar to the 1992 movie starring Whoopie Goldberg, but there is one major difference.

“It doesn’t have any music from the movie, but it does have great music written by Alan Menken, who did all of the great Disney movies like ‘Beauty and the Beast,’ ‘Aladdin’ and ‘The Little Mermaid,’ ” Broadhead said. “It’s a lot like the movie, so if you’ve seen the movie you know the (story). If you haven’t seen the movie, a night club singer named Delores (the part originated by Goldberg) has to hide out in a convent because she witnessed something, and let’s just leave it at that.”

Briana Wilson, who plays Delores, said her favorite aspect of the play is all the different costumes she wears and the wig. She also sings 11 songs.

“I saw (the movie) a few months ago, and it was pretty good, and then I watched the second one,” Wilson said. “It feels like a privilege (to take on the lead role). It’s Whoopie Goldberg. She's an icon.”

Among the other lead actors are Grace Roberts as Mother Superior, Jaden-Ann Fraser as Sister Mary Robert, Hannah Price as Sister Mary Patrick, Sydney “Syd” Allen as Sister Mary Lazarus and Matthew Johnson as Monsignor O’Hara.

A full cast list can be see in the photo gallery of the online version of this story at www.timesnews.net.

Allen describes her character as “very blunt and very sarcastic.”

“I’ve seen the movie many times,” she said. “My parents introduced it to me when I was younger. I really enjoyed the movie and I really enjoyed working on this.

“Mr. Broadhead told us a while ago what the plot of it was, and he was trying to get us to guess (the title). When he announced it, we’re like, ‘Oh my gosh. This is great. We’ve all seen the movie.”

Volunteer’s presentation of “Sister Act” is Friday and Saturday beginning at 7 both nights in the auditorium across from the gym. Tickets will be sold at the door for $7 each.
