KINGSPORT — Armonia, a local high school a cappella group, took the top spot in a competition last month in Kentucky.

The Dobyns-Bennett High School ensemble won first place in the Voices in Harmony A Cappella competition held in Lexington March 2-3. Also at the competition, Elise Rogers won best female vocalist and Campbell Garver won best male vocalist and best student arranger.

Members of Armonia 5.0 are Paul Adedokun, vocal percussion; Jed Ratliff, bass; Braydon Yonts, baritone; Evan Bishop, tenor 2; Campbell Garver, tenor 1; Anna Begley, alto 2; Elise Rogers, alto 1; Abbie Edwards, soprano 2; Katie Moore, soprano 1; and Kaylee Hubbard, soprano 1.

The group submitted a one-song audition video, which could be no more than five minutes  long, to be rated by A Cappella Education Association (AEA) certified judges. Finalists for the competition were selected and announced in mid-February.

In addition, the Varsity Choir recently performed in the Premiere National Choir Festival in Indianapolis. Twelve choirs from around the country were selected to perform at the event. All of the members of Armonia also sing in the Varsity Choir. Both groups are led by choral music teacher Jenny Rogers.

The Board of Education at its April 3 meeting honored the choral singers and programs, including a presentation by school board member Todd Golden.
