Friends for the Fight benefit dinner set for Oct. 7

More than half of cancer patients say cancer costs negatively impact their ability to focus on fighting their cancer and recovery, according to a survey conducted by the Association of Oncology Social Work (AOSW).

Friends for the Fight is working to help lessen that burden for local families by supporting the Patient Assistants Fund at the Wellmont Cancer Institute. The fund helps local patients with expenses such as rent, utilities, gas and prescriptions as they are undergoing treatment.

What started out as a community idea at Preaching Christ Church has since grown into a community organization with its own recently-acquired 501(c)(3) nonprofit status. Together, with help from the community, the organization works to serve and strengthen local families battling cancer.

Each year, the group has sponsored a benefit dinner to raise funds. Since the first fundraiser in 2015, Friends for the Fight has donated over $18,000 to the Patient Assistance Fund to help local families.

This year's event promises to be one of the best ever.

The Friends for the Fight Cancer Fundraising Dinner will be held at 5 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 7 at the Farmers Market in Downtown Kingsport. The event will include a catered dinner from Braeden's BBQ, a silent auction, raffles and entertainment by Folk Soul Revival.

Tickets are $20 for adults and $10 for children 12 and under with group tables (to seat 8 guests) available for $160. Money raised during the benefit is donated to Wellmont Cancer Institute’s Patient Assistance Fund.

Many of the patients who benefit from the services look forward to the event each year as it provides an opportunity to interact with the doctors, nurses, staff and other community members in a fun, relaxed environment outside the treatment center.

In addition to attending the benefit dinner yourself, there are a number of ways to support the fundraiser. You can: purchase gas cards to be distributed to patients; sponsor a table for your company, organization, survivor or 'In Memory' of a loved one; purchase a T-shirt or make a donation for a cancer patient to attend the dinner. There are also Hope Sponsorships, Strength Sponsorships and Courage Sponsorships available.
