KINGSPORT – Don’t miss this! It’s going to be a night of exciting rasslin’ action in downtown Kingsport this Sunday.

Southern States Wrestling is holding a special event at the Model City Event Center (201 E. Center Street) on Sunday with all proceeds going to benefit Kingsport wrestling legend Don Wright and his family.

Fire completely destroyed the Wright’s Bristol, Tennessee home on July 4, leaving the couple and their five grandchildren (ages 4 to 14) homeless. The family had been at Roan Mountain that day to camp and learned about their home burning down when friends called them to check on them.

In addition to losing their house, the Wright’s lost a vehicle, a camper, all of their pets and all of their possessions, including $18,000 in antique and collectibles. Since then, the family has been living in a hotel.

Wright, along with his brother and tag team partner Ron, were two of the most well-known wrestlers in the Tri-Cities from the 1960s through the 1980s. Ron passed away in April 2015.

ONE NIGHT ONLY

Sunday’s event will feature eight matches including:

— Daniel Richards (c) vs. Wayne Adkins for the Southern States Title

— Stan Sierra (c) vs. Kyle Maggard for the Appalachian Mountain Title

— Rebecca Lynn (c) vs. Misty James for the SSW Women’s Title

— Shawn Cruz and the Mega Destroyer vs. Legends of Kingsport Don Wright and Wayne Rogers for the SSW Tag Team Titles

Other wrestlers in action will include Beau James, Ray Idol, John Noble, Nate Diamond and Joe Briggs. Special guests slated to appear are Les Thatcher, Mac McMurray, Bobby Simmons, and a few surprises.

ITEMS FOR AUCTION

In addition to the wrestling matches, a number of items will be auctioned off with the proceeds going to the Wright family. James, the owner of SSW, said fans will be able to bid on some WWE pay-per-view chairs, books, signed photographs (including one from Kane), vintage and classic posters, ring worn gear, a title belt and more.

Items have been donated by the WWE, Jerry “The King” Lawler, Dr. Tom Prichard, Kane, Jerry Jarrett, Tracy Smothers and others.

Doors open at 5:45 p.m., the silent auction begins at 6:15 p.m. and bell time is 7:15 p.m. Bids will be accepted until intermission.

There is no admission, but James is suggesting a $10 donation for adults and $5 donation for kids. If you can give more please do, James said, noting that 100 percent of the gate and auction goes to the Wright Family.

If you would like to make a monetary donation, go to www.gofundme.com and search for “Sandy Wright Housefire Fund.”
