Crews search for body in Cherokee Lake

Update, 2:55 p.m. — Emergency personnel spent Sunday night and most of Monday searching for a drowning victim's body in Cherokee Lake.

The Hawkins County Rescue Squad's Facebook page initially stated the drowning occurred near Chelaque Estates in the Mooresburg community. Shortly after 6 p.m. Sunday, reports came in about a male who had jumped off a rock bluff and did not resurface.

A search was launched and continued until almost 10 p.m. Efforts resumed Monday morning and included the use of sonar devices. A command post and staging area was established at the Legacy Bay boat ramp, and a rescue diver from Kingsport reportedly joined the efforts.

At about 2 p.m. Monday, it was determined the drowning occurred in Hamblen County. As such, the Morristown Rescue Squad took over the search efforts, but a body had yet to be found.

Other agencies on scene included the Kingsport Life Saving Crew, Hancock County Rescue Squad, Bean Station Rescue Squad, Greeneville Emergency & Rescue Squad and the Hawkins County Sheriffs Office.

Update, 2:45 p.m. — The Hawkins County Rescue Squad reports the drowning is determined to have occurred in Hamblen County. As such, the Morristown Rescue Squad has taken over the search efforts.

Emergency personnel are searching Cherokee Lake in Hawkins County for a person believed to have drowned on Sunday.
