The outdoor facility has plenty of attractions for the whole family. A day pass or water park season pass gives patrons access to the 900-foot Eastman Credit Union lazy river, two waterslides, a climbing structure with water cannons, the lily pad crossing and all of the indoor pools. Outdoor cabanas are also available for rent for relaxation in the shade.
“The Kingsport Aquatic Center is the ideal place to relax and have some splashing fun without having to fight traffic,” said Aquatic Center Director Kari Matheney. “We have something to do for every age in a family-friendly environment.”
The KAC hosts numerous events and programs throughout the summer season. In addition to swim lessons, the KAC offers lifeguard training, swim clinics, the Junior Viperfish swim team and water aerobics classes, including lazy river classes and poolside yoga starting in June. The KAC will participate in Fun Fest as well, hosting a pool party, cardboard boat race and more.
May is Water Safety Month, and KAC will celebrate and educate all month long, with a day full of learning on International Water Safety Day May 15. The KAC will host the MATE International ROV Competition June 20-22. The summer rounds out with Back-to-School Movie Night on Aug. 3.
The KAC also wants to remind visitors to be safe this summer. Center officials ask patrons to wear shoes in the parking lot, not to let children roam unaccompanied, and to be mindful of the construction of the new pool that is underway.
“With a lot of activities occurring at the facility this summer, we encourage our guests to be aware of their surroundings and be vigilant both inside and outside the waterpark areas,” said Matheney. “We have a new road at our entrance and additional vehicular traffic in the lot, so watching out for small children, wearing appropriate footwear upon entering and leaving the facility, and observing any area closures due to construction will assist us in making your visit as pleasurable as possible during our expansion process.”
Summer swim lessons begin in June, and there are four sessions in June and July. The sessions consist of eight classes, Monday through Thursday, for two weeks. For KAC or YMCA members, lessons are $50 for the first child and $45 per additional child in the household. Non-member lessons are $60 for the first child and $55 per additional child. Scholarships are available for qualifying applicants. All group lessons are American Red Cross-certified. Lessons are offered in group, private and semi-private settings to work with children’s needs and schedules. A swim test is also offered to determine a child’s swim skills, if needed.
Registration for swim lessons begins online and in person at 8 a.m. on the dates listed in the schedule below and will close at 5 p.m. on the last day. The KAC asks patrons who register online to create an account the day before registration to make the process easier. YMCA members who plan to register online must show their YMCA card to the KAC front desk staff before registration. For detailed class descriptions and times, information on private lessons or to set up an account to register for lessons, visit swimkingsport.com or call the KAC at (423) 343-9758.
