KINGSPORT — Do you enjoy playing volleyball or dodgeball with your friends? How about in the dark with strangers, while wearing neon T-shirts and tossing around glow-in-the-dark rubber balls?

Sounds pretty groovy to us.

Kingsport’s Parks and Recreation Department will be hosting two glow-in-the-dark sporting events in the near future at the V.O. Dobbins Community Center (301 Louis St.). The first will be a volleyball event on Feb. 8 and the second, a dodgeball tournament on March 8.

“We did a glow dodgeball event last year, and we thought, ‘We have all of the stuff and we do volleyball here on Mondays with Eastman anyway,’ so we thought we would do it,” said Renee Ensor, program administrator with the city’s parks and recreation department.

During last year’s dodgeball event, Ensor said 60 people on 13 teams participated. Registration is underway for this year’s events. So far, 11 teams have signed up for volleyball. Here’s what you need to know:

GLOW VOLLEYBALL

When? — Feb. 8 at 6 p.m.

Ages? — 16 and above

Cost? — $2 per person with a minimum of four players per team. You must have two female players per team and on the court at all times.

GLOW DODGEBALL

When? — March 8 at 7 p.m.

Ages? — 16 and above

Cost? — $2 per player. Teams will have six players and two substitutes are allowed.

All participants must wear a neon or white T-shirt, Ensor said.

The department has volleyballs and dodgeballs on hand that glow in the dark, it has special tape on the floor and it has placed LEDs around the nets to outline them. On the day of the events, the black lights will go up and the normal lights will go out. Music will be jamming in the background.

The events will use a double elimination format, which means that each team is guaranteed to play two games. Glow-in-the-dark medals will be awarded for both events, and the city is trying to order neon T-shirts for the winners.
