Stranded trucker fatally struck on I-81 in Kingsport

KINGSPORT — Sunday’s snow storm proved fatal for a truck driver from Alabama, according to police, as his tractor trailer became disabled along Interstate 81 in Kingsport, then he was struck by a skidding SUV as he walked along the shoulder.

The incident occurred at about 1:30 p.m. The Kingsport Police Department reports that in northbound lanes near exit 66, a tractor trailer became disabled and the driver exited his cab to walk off of Interstate.

Meanwhile, a passing 2007 Dodge Journey hit a patch of slush and snow. The driver lost control, swerved right and fatally hit the pedestrian.

Kingsport police have identifed the victim as William James Taylor, 58, of Robertsdale, Alabama.

The driver of the Dodge was a 42-year-old man from Hughesville, Maryland. A 28-year-old woman was a passenger, as were a 5-year-old boy and eight-month-old child. None of the SUV occupants were injured.

The KPD Traffic Unit is continuing to investigate the crash. No other information is being released at this time.
