Rescue Fund: Single mother raising daughter in remission from leukemia

Being a single mother living in a new state can come with financial challenges, as Sullivan County resident Stacy* has experienced.

Stacy and her 8-year-old daughter, Shyanne, moved to East Tennessee after Shyanne’s father passed away. Shortly after her birth, Shyanne was diagnosed with leukemia, but has been in remission for five years.

Living with leukemia

Shyanne was born early and was diagnosed with leukemia at six months old, Stacy said. As defined by the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, leukemia is a type of cancer that affects the blood and bone marrow. Some forms of leukemia are more common in children, while others are more often found in adults.

Stacy said her daughter had the disease for about three years and has been in remission since. While she had the disease, Shyanne was treated at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital and at a hospital close to their home.

Though St. Jude does not charge families for medical treatment, medical bills added up from her daughter’s treatments at the other hospital. Luckily, though, Stacy said she had “a lot of help” with those expenses.

Financial needs

Stacy said she’s currently a stay-at-home mother who moved to East Tennessee to be close to her sister, who lives in the area.

“That’s pretty much the reason why I needed to get some help with gifts and stuff,” Stacy said, “because I don’t have a whole lot of money.”

Stacy said she will be receiving assistance from the Salvation Army’s Angel Tree this year, which she feels will help her daughter “have a great Christmas.”

“By the grace of God, I get the help,” Stacy said. “I thank God that there are such gracious people out there to help.”

How to help

You can help families like Stacy and Shyanne this Christmas season by donating to the Times News Rescue Fund, which supports the Salvation Army. This year’s fundraising goal is $60,000, and no gift is too small.
