KINGSPORT — Residents of Kingsport and the surrounding community are invited to join the fight against Alzheimer’s disease at the annual Walk to End Alzheimer’s.

Presented by Eastman Credit Union, the Kingsport walk will be held early next month, but registration is open now.

“The Walk to End Alzheimer’s is a great way to come together as a community to offer support and raise funds for those who are affected by this disease, because it’s devastating more families every day,” said Meredith Sieber, manager of development for the Alzheimer’s Association of Northeast Tennessee, in a press release. “Alzheimer’s kills more people than breast cancer and prostate cancer combined, and we have to stop the onset of this disease as soon as possible.”

About the walk

The Alzheimer’s Association’s Walk to End Alzheimer’s is the world’s largest event to raise awareness about and funds for Alzheimer’s care, support and research, according to the event’s website.

Held annually in more than 600 communities nationwide, the event provides an opportunity for people of all ages and abilities to join the fight against the disease, which is the sixth-leading cause of death in the U.S. and the only disease among the top 10 causes of death that cannot be cured, prevented or slowed, according to the Alzheimer’s Association.

Event details

This year’s walk will take place Oct. 6 on the Kingsport Greenbelt, behind the Holston Medical Group MedPlaza. Registration will begin at 9 a.m., followed by a Promise Garden ceremony at 10 a.m. to honor those who have been affected by Alzheimer’s.

The walk itself begins at 10:30 a.m. Participants will complete a two-mile walk along the Greenbelt, while learning about the disease, advocacy opportunities, clinical studies enrollment and support services, according to a press release.

Participants will be given information on local resources and programs that support Alzheimer’s patients. Music, food and games will also be on hand for children and their families.

Participants can register online now at alz.org/walk. Every registered participant will receive a T-shirt after achieving the fundraising minimum of $100.

All funds raised through the event will further the care, support and research efforts of the Alzheimer’s Association, a nonprofit organization.
