Tell Me a Story: How I started selling hemp

Tell Me A Story is a new series by the Kingsport Times News, where local people are asked to tell their stories. What types of story should we ask for? Email Valerie Lick at [email protected] with your ideas.

So here’s my story about hemp.

In 2017, my husband had a heart attack. We had no health insurance, so we were left over $100,000 of medical bills that we had to figure out how we were gonna pay.

So, the following month, a doctor that he works with suggests that he look into growing hemp. I was against it, because we have three adopted children and I’m not gonna grow pot — that’s ridiculous, right?

He kept at me, until he wore me down to the point where I would research. Once I started researching hemp, I found out that it wasn’t pot. It had so many medicinal properties to it — I couldn’t deny that.

So we decided to go ahead and jump. We are growing over 600 plants on our farm, and we’ve created a full line of bath and body products that are all circled around hemp, as well as CBD products.

We are seeing some amazing results from that CBD stuff, it’s really cool. Children being able to sit in church for the first time in their lives, children being able to go to Sunday school, children coming off of medications because the CBD hemp is helping them.

So, yeah. That’s it — pretty simple.
