ABINGDON — A 15-year-old Washington County male is dead after being struck by a vehicle during a “hood surfing” attempt Wednesday.

Virginia State Police Trooper J.P. Peck is investigating the incident, which occurred at approximately 3 p.m. on Childress Hollow Road, near Spring Valley Road.

According to the VSP, a 16-year-old Washington County female was driving a 2000 Chevrolet Cavalier on Childress Hollow Road when her passenger got out of the vehicle and crawled onto the hood with the intention of “hood surfing.” The Cavalier was traveling along Childress Hollow Road below the posted speed limit of 35 mph when the teenager slid off the hood. The driver was unable to brake in time and struck the male, who died at the scene.

After consultation with the Washington County commonwealth’s attorney, Peck cited the driver for reckless driving.

The incident remains under investigation.
