STICKLEYVILLE — A slide that brought at least one tree down with it on Wednesday temporarily shut down Route 58 on the Lee County side of Powell Mountain near the Scott County line.

The slide occurred earlier Wednesday morning, but at around 11:40 a.m. Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) Bristol District spokeswoman Michelle Earl said maintenance crews had “cleaned up that tree” and the road was open to traffic by that time.

Earl said VDOT’s district geologist would assess the site Wednesday or Thursday. Meanwhile, work crews will continue to monitor the area. Earl said crews will begin clearing other trees from the slide area on Thursday, and in the meantime will put up caution message boards to warn motorists to slow down and keep an eye out for work crews.

Earl said other slide repairs were already underway in that area, located between Stickleyville in Lee County and Duffield in Scott.

Unrelated to Wednesday’s slide but pertinent to Powell Mountain, Earl also said VDOT in coming months is planning to host a public hearing on planned truck climbing lanes. Those projects are currently in the planning phase, she said.
