Roe has the dough

Incumbent U.S. Rep. Phil Roe, despite a late re-election announcement, has a huge fundraising advantage over Democratic challenger Martin Olsen and GOP challenger Todd McKinley of Kingsport, according to Federal Election Commission records.

Roe only recently announced he will seek a sixth term to serve Tennessee’s 1st Congressional District.

How much campaign cash does Roe have?

During 2017, Roe raised $137,450, spent about $163,500 and had more than $438,000 cash on hand. He reported getting $8,000 from four other congressional campaigns, including $4,000 from House Speaker Paul Ryan’s campaign committee.

How much campaign cash does McKinley have?

At this point, Roe is opposed in the Republican primary by McKinley, who has raised about $3,660, spent approximately $2,900 and had about $755 cash on hand at the end of 2017.

How much campaign cash does Olsen have?

Olsen, who is expected to be the Republican nominee’s November general election opponent, has raised about $34,300, spent approximately $9,300 and had about $25,000 cash on hand at the end of 2017. Olsen reported a personal loan to his campaign of about $3,800. He is a Johnson City obstetrician/gynecologist.

In a release, Olsen’s campaign announced Clare Considine was recently hired as the full-time professional campaign manager.

“(Considine) has extensive experience in the management of state-level campaigns in Ohio and Kentucky,” the release noted. “She has an outstanding (9-1) record of success in helping voters appreciate when it is time to replace incumbents with fresh leadership.”
