JOHNSON CITY — The Tennessee Department of Health and Tennessee Attorney General’s Office have extended the deadline for closing the Mountain States Health Alliance and Wellmont Health System merger deal, according to documents retrieved by the Johnson City Press.

Instead of a Jan. 1 deadline, Mountain States and Wellmont executives now have until Jan. 31 to finalize the hospital merger, which has to occur before the state will officially grant the combined company, Ballad Health, its Certificate of Public Advantage.

According to a Dec. 8 letter to Tennessee Health Commissioner Dr. John Dreyzehner, the health systems requested the extension for two reasons.
