No one was injured in the incident, with the alleged gunman, Darius D. Woodbury, 21, arrested late Friday night. He is charged with felony reckless endangerment and eight counts of aggravated assault.
According to a Monday press release from the Kingsport Police Department, the shooting occurred late Wednesday. At about 11:45 p.m., several individuals were walking on Riverside Avenue, returning from dinner at a nearby restaurant. Police report that the group was targeted with "obscene and disparaging remarks" from people at a residence. Woodbury was a visitor to that home, according to police, with the pedestrians earlier being accosted when they initially walked by the residence to go eat.
The second altercation led to a challenge to fight, according to the KPD, with Woodbury pulling a handgun and shooting several rounds. Police say at least eight victims were in his line of fire, with Woodbury then running from the scene.
As he fled, Woodbury reportedly shot his firearm into the air. One round hit an SUV parked on Mimosa Drive, while another round went through the exterior wall into the living room of an apartment. Police say that residence was occupied by an innocent victim who was not involved with the altercations.
Responding detectives located several fired shell casings in the street and a nearby parking lot. Woodbury, of 1438 Prospect St., was not immediately located but was quickly tabbed as the gunman. He was found Friday night in the parking lot of Waffle House on West Stone Drive and arrested without incident.
As of Monday, Woodbury remained held in the city jail awaiting arraignment.
