DRYDEN — Two years ago, the members of Lee County’s Dryden High School Class of 1959 began looking at ways they could help meet the needs of the students who attend Dryden Elementary School.

The former Dryden High School is now Dryden Elementary School and houses approximately 360 students in grades K-5. Prior to their 55th year class reunion in 2014, Fred Gibson and Dr. Ron Ely did a little research and learned Lee County has the least wealth per capita of any county in Virginia, so it has a very limited ability to support schools through taxation.

The Class of 1959 established Dryden Alumni and Friends Helping Dryden Elementary School Students.

Last year, the group held a fundraising event, with the proceeds going to help the children.

A second Dryden Crusader Concert is planned for this weekend. All money raised will be used to assist students at the school.

This year’s event will begin at 7 p.m. Saturday in the Lee High School C. Bascom Slemp Auditorium. Doors open at 6 p.m.

Saturday’s concert will be held in conjunction with Armed Forces Day, with the entire program honoring local veterans and soldiers. All veterans are invited to attend.

Organizers say it will be an evening of patriotic music, featuring the Voices of Hope Community Choir as well as a choir made up of students from Lee County. The Tri-Cities gospel quartet the Crystal River Boys will also perform.

Everyone is asked to bring photos of family members who served in the armed forces. The photos will be displayed on a board in the auditorium.

Tickets are $10 each and may be purchased at the door or at the front office at Dryden Elementary School prior to the day of the event.

For ticket information, call Dryden Elementary School at (276) 546-4443.
