According to a KPD news release, officers responded to the 1000 block of Reedy Place at about 10:15 p.m. to investigate the report of a shooting. When they arrived on scene, they located an adult male shooting victim, later identified as Samuel J. Sturgill, lying in the roadway.
Sullivan County EMS transported Sturgill, 23, of Kingsport, to Holston Valley Medical Center for emergency treatment, but he did not survive. He succumbed to his injuries after arrival at the hospital, police said.
The KPD Criminal Investigations Division investigated the incident throughout the night and into Sunday.
According to the news release, Abram Jeremiah Amos, 20, of 395 Rolling Drive, Kingsport, was quickly developed as a person of interest and was soon tracked down at a residence in the 900 block of Chadwell Road in Sullivan County.
A vehicle matching the description of one observed fleeing the scene of the shooting was found parked behind the same residence, police said. Amos was transported to the Kingsport Justice Center.
After further investigation, Amos was positively identified as the suspect in the shooting, police said.
Amos was charged with second-degree murder and confined in the Kingsport City Jail pending arraignment.
The firearm believed to have been used in the shooting was recovered. To protect the integrity of the investigation and future prosecution, further details of the incident will not be revealed at this time, police said.
While the specific motive will not be released, KPD officials stressed that the shooting was not a random act of violence and Sturgill and Amos were acquainted prior to the incident.
KPD officials also said they would like to thank the Sullivan County Sheriff’s Office for its assistance throughout the investigation.
