Shortly before 4 p.m., Mount Carmel Police Department Officer Kenny Lunsford Sr. responded to a parking lot on Carters Valley Road where Marie Spivey had been temporarily blinded by pepper spray.
Spivey stated that she was backing out of a driveway onto the roadway when a silver vehicle almost hit her.
She stated she was traveling east on Carters Valley Road when the driver of that silver vehicle passed her, then slowed down in front of her and kept hitting the brakes.
Spivey then pulled into the parking lot at 5602 Carters Valley Road.
The suspect, later identified as Paige Renee Carpenter, 35, 122 1/2 Fairview Lane, Church Hill, then reportedly pulled into the parking lot next to Spivey and “asked her what her problem was.”
MCPD detective Cody Bussell stated in his report that Carpenter then allegedly pulled out a blue container and sprayed Spivey in the face with pepper spray.
“The victim was unable to see and couldn’t give a good description of the vehicle, but she was able to get a photo of the vehicle,” Bussell said.
Hawkins County Sheriff’s Office Deputy Kevin Johnson later located the silver vehicle in the driveway at Carpenter’s residence, where police later spoke to her about the incident.
Carpenter reportedly stated she sprayed the other driver with pepper spray after the woman threw an object that struck her in the face.
Bussell stated he observed a small scratch on Carpenter’s left cheek.
Carpenter stated that following the incident she went to the Tiny Giant Market because she was scared.
Lunsford subsequently acquired video surveillance of Carpenter at the front counter in the store where she was allegedly observed holding the pepper spray container as well as a set of brass knuckles.
Aside from aggravated assault, Carpenter was charged with possession of a prohibited weapon.
Aggravated assault is a Class C felony punishable by 3-6 years.
Hawkins County EMS responded to the parking lot and gave Spivey first aid to clear her eyes.
Carpenter was released from the Hawkins County Jail on bond Wednesday afternoon.
