KINGSPORT — A city man has been charged with animal cruelty after allegedly leaving a dog unattended for up to a week and apparently setting out frosted breakfast cereal to serve as its food.

An ongoing investigation resulted in Kingsport police locating George T. Pierce, 47, early Tuesday morning at a home on Robertson Street. He was served with a citation for animal cruelty and is scheduled to appear in court on Jan. 24.

According to records at the Kingsport Police Department, the dog was living in Pierce’s home, located in the 1900 block of Flanders Street. Detectives were told that over the last several months, the animal had been left alone for “long periods of time.” Pierce had reportedly been living with his girlfriend and “couldn’t take the dog to her residence.”

An officer visited Pierce’s home — which had no running water or power — and spotted the dog inside. It allegedly appeared to be in the early stages of emaciation with visible ribs and a sunken abdomen.

Due to the animal’s dire condition, police forced entry into the residence and observed feces and urine throughout the home, while a food bowl was overflowing with frosted wheat cereal.

Police add that the excessive animal waste surrounding the food and water dishes had created a barrier, preventing the dog from accessing them.

Animal control responded to the scene and took the animal to a veterinarian for examination. Meanwhile, subsequent investigation indicated that for approximately a week, no one had visited the dog to provide care.

Pierce has until his January court date to report to the city jail for processing on his citation. No mugshot of him is currently available.
