Sullivan County pursuit nets stolen vehicles, two arrests

Staff report • Nov 26, 2018 at 12:07 PM

BLOUNTVILLE — A pair of erratic drivers caught the eye of police last week, igniting a pursuit and recovery of stolen cars from Kingsport and Gray.

According to a press release from the Sullivan County Sheriff's Office, the incident occurred on Wednesday. As SCSO Detective Matt Harrison traveled on Highway 126 in Blountville, he spotted a silver Honda Civic and blue Honda Civic that were speeding and crossing the center line. The latter car also failed to have a license plate displayed.

When the drivers entered Interstate 81 at Exit 66 and headed south, a traffic stop was attempted. Both suspects failed to pull over. At mile marker 64, the driver of the blue Civic exited off the shoulder of I-81, then he jumped from the car and ran up an embankment.

While a description of that suspect was broadcast over police radio, Harrison continued pursuing the driver of the silver Civic. He also confirmed through dispatch that the vehicle had been reported stolen in Kingsport.

At Exit 63, the suspect exited I-81 and fled onto Lynn Road, passing another motorist on a double yellow line. Shortly after turning onto Fieldcrest Road, the car's engine failed, and the driver was taken into custody.

Police say he was identified as Thomas Daniel Hoff, 21, of Gate City. He was arrested and charged with possession of the stolen vehicle, felony evading arrest, driving left of the center line, reckless driving, failure to yield and speeding.

Meanwhile, officers soon found the alleged driver of the other car along Shipley Ferry Road. He was identified as Cameron T. Rice, 31, of Kingsport, and arrested on the same charges. He was additionally charged with improper display of registration and driving on a suspended or revoked license.

Hoff and Rice each posted $10,000 bond and have since been released.
