According to Kingsport Police Department Public Information Officer Tom Patton, the victim was traveling through the area with family and stopped for the night at Super 8, 700 Lynn Garden Drive. Following the incident, he was treated at a local hospital for "no less than three" gunshot wounds to the back, but has since been released.
The shooting occurred at about 1:45 a.m. Police declined to release a report to the media as detectives investigated the case to pinpoint a suspect.
On Tuesday afternoon, Patton told the Times News that the victim and his wife heard a disturbance outside their room. When the husband stepped out to investigate, he reportedly saw a group of individuals in the breezeway, including a black male who was beating a female.
When the man attempted to intervene in the assault, a second black male allegedly produced a handgun. Patton says that while the husband retreated the armed individual fired multiple times. As the victim crawled back into his motel room, his wife called 911, and the group in the breezeway dispersed.
Sullivan County EMS responded and transported the man for treatment. Ultimately, none of his wounds proved life-threatening.
Investigation by KPD detectives has since tabbed the gunman as Mark A. Harold, 20, of 419 Allen Drive, Apartment C 107, Kingsport. Police have now obtained warrants charging Harold with attempted second-degree murder, aggravated assault and two counts of reckless endangerment.
Patton says Harold should be considered armed and dangerous. Anyone with information on his whereabouts is asked to call the KPD at (423) 246-9111. Tips can also be submitted via the KPD's online "Citizen Feedback" forms:
Citing an active investigation with arrest and prosecution pending, Patton declined to release any additional information at this time.
