SURGOINSVILLE — A Hawkins County man was killed in a two-vehicle accident Wednesday evening after he reportedly pulled out onto Highway 11-W in Surgoinsville into the path of an oncoming pickup.

According to a report filed by Tennessee Highway Patrol Trooper Dylan Reid, around 5:34 p.m. Harley L. Wallen, 52, of Surgoinsville, was driving a 1998 Chevy Lumina when he attempted to pull out of Surgoinsville Creek Road into a westbound lane of 11-W.

At the same time a 2002 Ford F350 pickup driven by Ryan H. Bos, 33, of Rogersville, was traveling east on 11-W in the inside lane when the Lumina pulled out into its path.

Reid stated in his report that Bos attempted to avoid the crash, but struck the front end of the Lumina and the driver’s side door.

Reid stated in his report that Wallen wasn’t wearing a seatbelt, but in this crash it wouldn’t have made a difference.

Bos wasn’t injured, and no citations were issued.

So far in 2018 there have been seven traffic fatalities in Hawkins County. At this time last year, there had been nine.
