Kingsport police seek suspects in Walmart theft

Staff report • Jul 20, 2018 at 8:30 PM

KINGSPORT — City police are soliciting tips about two people who falsely claimed ownership of a smartphone and wallet at Walmart.

The incident happened on July 14 at the Walmart Neighborhood Market on Lynn Garden Drive. The victim in the case accidentally left the items in a shopping cart, then placed it into a rack in the parking lot.

Police say an employee located the items and asked a couple parked next to the rack if they belonged to them. They reportedly lied and stated yes, taking the wallet and smartphone, which constituted the offense of theft.

The phone is valued at $900, while the wallet contained assorted debit and credit cards, cash, the victim’s Social Security card and driver’s license. The suspects left the scene in a mid to late 1990s midsize SUV that was either silver or gold.

Security footage from the store captured images of the pair. Anyone who recognizes them is asked to contact the Kingsport Police Department at (423) 229-9429 or (423) 246-9111.
