BLOUNTVILLE — Authorities say one man has died at the Sullivan County jail in Blountville from what appears to be natural causes, while an inmate at the Bristol Virginia Sheriff’s Office was hospitalized after attempting suicide.
The suicide attempt was discovered Monday night. According to a press release from the BVSO, a deputy making rounds found the inmate hanging in a cell.
The Bristol Lifesaving Crew and Bristol Virginia Fire Department responded to the jail, and the inmate was transported to Bristol Regional Medical Center. Foul play is not suspected, but as is standard procedure, the Bristol Virginia Police Department was contacted to investigate.
The name of the inmate is being withheld pending the notification of family.
Meanwhile, an inmate at the Sullivan County jail, Charles Stacy, 58, was found unresponsive in his cell Sunday night. He had been held since June 25 for DUI and driving on a suspended license.
Sullivan County Sheriff’s Office Public Information Officer Kristen Quon reports that Stacy was transported to a hospital and pronounced dead. Though preliminary reports indicate that he died from natural causes, his body was sent to the Quillen College of Medicine for an autopsy.
