CHURCH HILL — A Hawkins County mother accused of leaving her children home alone without edible food to take a trip to California with her boyfriend was arrested and charged with child neglect upon returning home Monday evening.

On the afternoon of June 19, Hawkins County Sheriff’s Office Deputy Logan Tate responded to a request to check on the welfare of the children at the home of Volha D. Purswani, 35, 348 Byington Road, located just north of Surgoinsville.

Tate found three children — ages 12, 8 and 4  —home alone.

“They stated their mother had went to California with her boyfriend and left them alone at the residence,” Tate said. “There was no working air conditioner in the residence. The children also had no food to eat. The food that was at the residence was outdated and rotten. (The 8-year-old) stated she vomited from eating outdated food.”

The Department of Children’s Services was contacted and removed the children from the home, and photos and other evidence of the children’s living conditions were gathered.

No information about how long the children had been alone before police and DCS were contacted was available.

The HCSO had been watching the home since June 19, and Purswani was arrested on the child neglect warrant Monday at 5:30 p.m. at her home.

As of Tuesday, she was being held in the Hawkins County Jail with no bond set pending arraignment Wednesday morning in Sessions Court.
