KINGSPORT — Smoking proved imminently hazardous to a city man's health on Monday, according to police records, after a woman stabbed him multiple times for trying to light up in her home.

Regina A. Yates, 30, of 1129 Bridwell St., faces a charge of attempted second-degree murder in the incident. At about 10 a.m., officers were called to her residence and found the victim — listed in Kingsport Police Department records as an acquaintance — in the street with puncture wounds to his back and chest.

According to a witness and the 52-year-old victim, Yates had told him not to smoke in her home. When he attempted to do so, she "became mad … produced a knife and stabbed him."

EMS transported the victim to Holston Valley Medical Center for treatment. Another individual on scene said that he arrived after Yates called him about an argument with the man, admitting over the phone that she had stabbed him.

Detectives were called in to investigate further, while Yates was booked into the city jail. She was scheduled for arraignment on Tuesday morning.
