Kingsport man charged with attempted murder of trooper

GREENEVILLE — A Sullivan County man alleged to have opened fire on a Tennessee Highway Patrol trooper along Interstate 81 last month is now behind bars. 

According to the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation, Kenneth C. Powell, 25, was booked into the Greene County Jail on Thursday evening. He had been hospitalized for treatment of gunshot wounds which he sustained when the trooper returned fire during the May 18 incident.

The officer had spotted a vehicle stopped along the ramp leading to the weigh station at mile marker 21. Powell was behind the wheel and reportedly stated he was almost out of fuel.

Further investigation by the trooper revealed that the truck was reported stolen out of Sullivan County. When confronted about the vehicle, Powell allegedly attempted to flee and drove the truck into the median.

The TBI says that as the trooper approached the vehicle, Powell began firing shots from inside the truck. The officer returned fire, striking Powell.

Powell is is charged with attempted first-degree murder and is currently held on $100,000 bond. An investigation into the incident is continuing.
