According to a Tennessee Highway Patrol report, Austin C. Jones, 22, of Kingsport was driving a 2005 Volkswagon east on Carters Valley Road around 12:04 a.m. when he apparently crossed the center line near the Old Hickory Drive intersection.
The Volkswagon then reportedly hit a westbound 2002 Jeep SUV head on.
Jones wasn't wearing a seatbelt and later succumbed to his injuries. THP Trooper Andrew Coppinger stated in his report that a seatbelt could have made a difference.
The driver of the Jeep, Charity F. Derrick, 21, of Kingsport suffered non-life threatening injuries. Derrick was, wearing a a seatbelt.
Derrick was also cited for no insurance and no registration.
