BIG STONE GAP — Virginia officials on Monday released the identity of the inmate allegedly fatally assaulted by another inmate at Wallens Ridge State Prison in Big Stone Gap last week.

The Virginia Department of Corrections identified the deceased as 55-year-old Donald Gary. He was pronounced dead at Lonesome Pine Hospital in Big Stone Gap at approximately 2:45 p.m. Friday of injuries allegedly received at the hands of another inmate.

The agency said Gary was serving a sentence of life plus 207 years for multiple robbery convictions, larceny, assault and battery, carjacking, kidnap/abduction and other convictions.

No details of the alleged fatal assault on Gary were available. Last week, Wise County Commonwealth's Attorney Chuck Slemp said any charges against other inmates awaits the conclusion of the Virginia Department of Corrections investigation into Gary's death.

Slemp's office prosecutes cases brought against inmates incarcerated at Wallens Ridge and Red Onion State Prison, located near Pound, because both facilities are located in the county.
