KPD warns of red light violation scam

Staff report • Apr 20, 2018 at 2:07 PM

KINGSPORT — City police say some local residents are receiving fraudulent e-mails demanding payment for traffic violations allegedly recorded in Kingsport.

According to a Friday afternoon press release, the messages originate from the email address trafficcameraviolations@usdot.gov, and contain the subject line “Moving Violation Recorded by Traffic Camera.”

The Kingsport Police Department says the email address is not an official government address and is in no way affiliated with the KPD’s Redflex cameras.

“There may also be one or more attachments to the email where the recipient can allegedly view, pay, or appeal the citation,” the KPD reports. “Citizens are strongly discouraged from opening any attachments to these emails, as they could potentially infect the host computer with a virus or spyware.”

Anyone who receives such an email about a violation recorded by a traffic camera in Kingsport should assume that it is a scam. Such citations in the Model City are always sent as paper copies by traditional mail, never by electronic means.
