ROGERSVILLE — A woman who went to the Hawkins County Jail last week to bail out an inmate instead found herself behind bars on charges including cocaine possession and public intoxication.

Around 3:43 p.m. Wednesday, the front desk staff at the jail asked Hawkins County Sheriff’s Office detective Reba Matthews to check out a woman in the front lobby who was having difficulty communicating.

The woman, Lana Michelle Lane, 42, 102 Bowlin Lane, Lot 4, Rogersville, had reportedly gone to the jail to post bail for an inmate.

Matthews stated in her report, however, that Lane had slurred speech, was fidgeting uncontrollably and had trouble standing, walking or having a conversation.

"Ms. Lane was constantly rubbing her face and running her hands through her hair," Matthews said. "Ms. Lane said she was a meth user and she had used before making contact with me."

Lane reportedly consented to a search, at which time Matthews allegedly located a small bag containing about a quarter-gram of cocaine, one whole pill and two halves believed to be Xanax, one pill believed to be Gabapentin, a glass pipe, two straws and other drug paraphernalia.

She was charged with simple possession of cocaine, simple possession of Schedule IV narcotics, possession of legend drugs, possession of drug paraphernalia and public intoxication.

Lane remained held in the Hawkins County Jail as of Monday morning, when she was scheduled for arraignment in Sessions Court.
