NORTON — A Norton man has been charged with first-degree attempted murder and other offenses following an early morning shooting in the city that left a woman hospitalized.

Norton Police Chief James Lane said officers responded to a 5:44 a.m. call at Norton Community Hospital, where the woman was being treated. After speaking to the victim and a male subject, officers took into custody 47-year-old Gregory Ernest Milam.

Lane said it appears the victim sustained severe injuries to her chest and one of her hands. The hand injuries appeared to have been in a defensive posture, he said.

Officers later executed search warrants at 208 9th St. NW in Norton and on a vehicle parked at Norton Community Hospital.

Besides attempted first-degree murder, Milam was also charged with reckless handling of a firearm, discharge of a firearm inside an occupied dwelling, use of a firearm during the commission of a felony and aggravated malicious wounding.

Milam was being held at the Southwest Virginia Regional Jail in Duffield without bond. The victim's identity and condition was not being released by authorities on Sunday.
