THP: Washington County school bus driver wrecked after falling asleep

Tennessee Highway Patrol officials said the driver of a Washington County school bus fell asleep at the wheel as he was transporting children home Tuesday, leading to a crash on a winding rural road.

Though some students involved in the crash said they believed the bus may have broken an axle or another part of its suspension before plowing into a ditch and a tree, the state investigation showed no pre-existing mechanical issues at the time of the crash.

According to the crash report, the driver, Lanty Ross Lindley, 68, and five students were transported to an area hospital for treatment for minor injuries.
