KINGSPORT — An investigation into last Thursday’s fatal head-on collision on East Stone Drive is continuing, with police saying they need to locate a vital witness.

According to the Kingsport Police Department, a Chevrolet Blazer crossed into oncoming traffic and hit another SUV, killing that second vehicle’s passenger: Tiffany L. Moore, 30. The at-fault driver, identified as Brian E. Johnson, 39, then ran from the scene before being apprehended by police.

Johnson remains hospitalized with injuries sustained in the wreck and is under police guard. He faces several charges, including aggravated vehicular homicide and driving under the influence.

The driver of the other vehicle, Brandon O. Beavers, 30, has been released from medical care.

Crash investigators believe that immediately prior to the fatal collision, another motorist had to take evasive action to avoid being hit by Johnson’s vehicle. Police are asking that person to come forward, as details only he or she can provide could be “extremely important” to the investigation.

The KPD Traffic Unit can be reached by calling (423) 224-2750 or dialing Central Dispatch at (423) 246-9111.
