EWING — The Lee County Sheriff’s Office and the Virginia State Police are investigating threats apparently uttered by a student at Thomas Walker High School on Wednesday.

On Thursday, Lee County Public Schools Superintendent Brian Austin confirmed that an investigation has been underway, but he said the school was never in a lockdown situation, as some in the community had thought.

“We are working with the Sheriff’s Office and the Virginia State Police, and we are aware of the situation and making the building as secure as possible. And of course we are investigating it thoroughly,” Austin told the Times-news.

“There was an incident yesterday (Wednesday) at the school, and of course I can’t talk a whole lot about that (because of legal and policy constraints). But I can say we became aware of a threat, we spoke with the individual and we are in the process of investigating the legitimacy of it to the greatest extent possible, so we continue to work on that.”
