BLOUNTVILLE — A Sullivan County Sheriff’s Office employee has been terminated from his position after being charged with a felony in Bristol, Va.

According to a news release from the SCSO, corrections officer Michael Payne, 23, was arrested on charges of public intoxication and assault on an officer early Friday. A Bristol, Virginia, Police Department report states Payne was passed out in the passenger seat of a vehicle that was being driven by another person who was arrested for DUI.

Officers attempted to wake Payne multiple times, but he reportedly refused. When he did wake up, the report states, Payne began to fight and hit an officer in the chest and arm with his fist. Payne was arrested and taken to the Bristol, Virginia, Sheriff’s Department Jail, where he was released on a $2,500 bond.

Sullivan County Sheriff Wayne Anderson says that he would like to iterate that this type of behavior will not be tolerated at the SCSO. Payne had been employed at the SCSO since August 2016
