Staff report • Feb 8, 2018 at 4:30 PM

WISE — A Wise County woman was killed early Thursday in a crash on U.S. Route 23 in the vicinity of the Indian Creek Mountain Flea Market, the Virginia State Police reported.

The VSP said a 2006 Toyota 4-Runner driven by Michaela S. Maine, 41, Pound, was traveling north when it ran off the right side of the highway at around 5:25 a.m.

The VSP said Maine overcorrected, causing the SUV to cross back into the northbound lanes, run off the left side through the median and strike a southbound 2010 Chevy 2500 pickup head-on.

The impact of the crash caused the Toyota to continue off the side of the southbound lanes and down an embankment, the VSP said. Meanwhile, the pickup collided with a southbound 2016 Kia.

Maine, the only occupant of the Toyota, died at the scene. The adult male drivers of the two other vehicles were transported to nearby hospitals for treatment of injuries that were not life-threatening, the VSP said.

The crash remains under investigation.
