ELIZABTHTON — Murderer Eric Azotea will spend the rest of his life in prison after pleading guilty Wednesday morning, allowing him to avoid the death penalty prosecutors originally sought.

In Carter County Criminal Court, Azotea pleaded guilty to two counts of first-degree murder in exchange for life without parole, a move that salvaged the murder trial nearly tanked by just a few words from one witness.

Judge Stacy Street stated the details of yesterday’s testimony that affected the trial on the record Wednesday, affirming that juries cannot hear information about a defendant’s criminal history.
