ST. CHARLES -- Authorities on Monday were investigating the shooting death of a Lee County man.

At around 3:30 p.m. Lee County Sheriff Gary Parsons said his office received the call shortly before noon on Monday to respond to 2058 St. Charles Rd. in St. Charles, located north of Pennington Gap.

Parsons said an acquaintance of the male resident "went to check on the gentleman and found him deceased, dead of a gunshot wound." The Lee County Sheriff's Office and the Virginia State Police are conducting a joint investigation, Parsons said, and are treating the case as a homicide at this time because no firearm was found at the scene.

Parsons said the victim was 59-years old but as of around 3:40 p.m. was withholding identification pending notification of next of kin. Authorities were still working the scene, Parsons added.
